Tamil Nadu Chennai Esports Global Championship
In a historic move for Indian esports, the Tamil Nadu Government has unveiled the Chennai Esports Global Championship (CeGC), a prestigious international esports tournament. This marks the first time an Indian state has initiated such a large-scale global event, highlighting Tamil Nadu’s commitment to the growing esports industry.
Scheduled to take place in Chennai later this year, the CeGC will feature multiple esports titles and attract top-tier teams from around the world. This initiative is a major step toward positioning Chennai as a global esports hub, leveraging the city's history of hosting international sporting events.
The Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department of Tamil Nadu, which has been allocated ₹562 crore in the state’s 2025-2026 budget, is leading the project. A portion of this budget will be dedicated to making CeGC a reality, further reinforcing the state’s support for the esports ecosystem.
Tamil Nadu has already demonstrated a keen interest in esports, notably with the successful inclusion of esports in the CM’s Trophy 2024. Organized by Skyesports, this event attracted over 5,000 participants from across the state, setting the stage for even greater engagement through CeGC.
The announcement of CeGC comes at a crucial moment for the esports industry, which has gained recognition as a legitimate sport both nationally and globally. Earlier this year, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports included esports in its cash incentive program, a move welcomed by the industry. Additionally, esports has been recognized as a medal event in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games, and it is set to debut as a standalone Olympic event in 2027.
With the Chennai Esports Global Championship, Tamil Nadu is making a bold statement in the world of competitive gaming. This initiative is expected to nurture homegrown talent, provide a platform for Indian esports athletes, and solidify India’s presence on the global esports stage.
