Recently, The Sweet Boutique created a dazzling, 6 feet high, 7 tier, entirely edible 24 karat gold cake for a cocktail reception in New Delhi. Each inch of the cake was blanketed with edible 24 karat gold powder and cost Rs. 3 Lakhs.

This real gold powder is not easily available, even internationally and can only be sourced by select companies in U.S.A. The cake also supported intricate carvings, red roses and glittering gold Venetian masks and each of these was edible. The tall cake beautifully mimicked the theme of the event, ‘Phantom of the Opera'.
Speaking about the concept and idea behind designing the masterpiece, Nitin Khurana, Director, The Sweet Boutique said, "Keeping in mind the theme, we felt that in terms of colour, gold would be the most appropriate. However, most importantly, the client gave us complete freedom to design the cake. In addition, the budgets were not rigid, which allowed us to widen our creative horizon."
Today, every aspect of the Indian wedding and its various celebrations is dominated by the fact that it has to be different, larger than life and opulent. Perhaps why, the glitterati demands a cake that not only tastes excellent but makes a statement about his/her social stature. Many times money is not even a consideration.
However describing another aspect, Khurana also described how while working on any project, the client either has a set budget and if not, he/she remains very specific in terms of the theme, colours and design of the cake. In such a scenario, the creativity and innovation of the cake designer definitely gets restricted."
