Creative Factory, a visual content studio headquartered in Mumbai recently produced stunning projection mapping for the high-profile GVK Sangeet Ceremony held on Januray 27 in Hyderabad. In an exclusive interview with Vibhore Khandelwal, Founder, Creative Factory, we get a tech & production lowdown on the experiential extravaganza.
What was the brief from the client for the mapping experience?
Our clients Sandeep Khosla and Sanjay Reddy gave a very clear brief of what they wanted for the event which was an amalgamation of a European and Fantasy Experience. Since the mapping had to be done for a Sangeet function the thought was to create an immersive experience by constantly changing the ambiance of the entire venue.
For the guest entry, we created 9 different themes that kept on changing every 2 minutes with thematic music and lighting. Additionally, we also produced four and a half minutes of dynamic mapping experience and an hour worth of content for Ranveer Singh and Jacqueline Fernandez’s acts and graphics for the DJ.
What were the challenges of projection mapping in a crowded social event?
The first and the biggest challenge was the size since this was the largest projection mapping experience for a wedding in India. Close to 25,000 x 1080 pixels were used for mapping which is only a little less than 12 times of HD content. The technicals were planned in a very structured manner by Vijay Sabhlok which gave us the good time of 3 days to do all our tests and adjust. The set did not have any problems which reduced the time we usually spend in aligning the projectors.
Take us through the set-up involved and the process of execution.
28 Projectors with casting intensity of over 5,60,000 Lumens creating a canvas of close to 25,000 x 1080 resolution. In this kind of setup, one must justify the use of technology by complimenting with great looking visual content. A team of 35 people was employed to execute the project and the process included creating a mood board first to give the client an idea of what style and color pallets we are going to used. Post this, a detailed process of painting and 3-D animation productions started. Each theme took almost 10 days per artist and we literally painted the entire canvas of approx. 480 feet digitally. We had to go all out on this because we had complete freedom to use our creativity on this project. it took us 4 weeks to produce the content and deliver it on site 3 days before the actual show.
What was the response of the audience?
I am sure they had a great time. Our clients too were overjoyed with our work.
How economical are elements like video and projection mapping for social events?
Well, there is no rate card for visual content. It all depends on the requirement and the scale of the show. Sometimes, a 2-minute can cost more than 10 minutes of the job. The affordability also depends on the quality one needs. Having said that, today technology has become so flexible that it can fit in a small ballroom and in a large tent at the same time. As far as we are concerned, no matter what your cost is, we can create an experience for you.
