Marriott International, Inc. is an American diversified hospitality company that
manages and franchises a broad portfolio of hotels and related lodging facilities.
Their subsidiary is collectively known as Marriott Hotels & Resorts, and was
recently named to the Forbes World’s Most Innovative Companies List, ranking as
the highest hotel company and #18 overall. Founded in 1927 by J. Willard Marriott,
they opened their first hotel, the Twin Bridges Marriott Motor Hotel, in Arlington,
Virginia, in 1957. Their second hotel, the Key Bridge Marriott in the Rosslyn neighborhood
of the same city, is Marriott International’s longest continuously operating hotel,
and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2009.
Marriott India is the Indian division of the Marriott International hotel chain.
It was established in 1998 and opened its first hotel, the Goa Marriott Resort (now
the Goa Marriott Resort & Spa) on 15th Dec 1999. The Indian division currently
operates 33 hotels in India. In 2012 Marriott Hotels & Resorts celebrated the
opening of the 500th Marriott Hotels & Resorts property, the Pune Marriott Hotel
& Convention Centre, in Pune, India.
The company is now led by his son, Executive Chairman and Chairman of the Board
of Marriott International Bill Marriott and President and Chief Executive Officer
Arne Sorenson.
Marriott operates 19 brands internationally having more than 4,200 properties in
over 80 countries and territories around the world, over 697,000 rooms (as of July
2014), and additional 195,000 rooms in the development pipeline.
